A Decade of the Munchak Scholarship
Scranton Native, NFL Hall of Famer continues yearly $6,300 Scholarship
Scranton, PA (22-February-2021) – Whether in-person, virtual, or a hybrid combination of both, this 2020-2021 school year has been unique to say the least. However, the United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties is proud to keep one piece of this school year a constant; the Mike Munchak Community Service Scholarship.
Entering its tenth year in existence, this scholarship named for NFL Hall of Famer and Scranton native Mike Munchak and funded by the United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties is currently accepting applications from high school seniors within any Lackawanna and Wayne County school district. This one-time $6,300 award commemorates Munchak’s Hall of Fame Career as #63 for the Houston Oilers as their 2-Time, First Team All-Pro Left Guard.
“With the pandemic cancelling the 2020 Munchak Golf Classic, we were fortunate enough to still award the scholarship to a deserving student. We hope to be back on the links this June, but we are very excited to reward a bright, hard-working senior in these extremely challenging times regardless,” said Gary Drapek, President & CEO of United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties.
To be eligible, candidates must be show pastor current involvement in community service programs funded by United Way, be accepted by an accredited university, college or trade school, in a two or four-year degree program track for the 2021-2022 school year all while demonstrating a successful path of academic achievement. Each applicant must also submit a Letter of Recommendation from the nominating United Way funded program/agency.

The scholarship winner will be selected by April 30, 2021. The winner and his/her parents or guardians will be invited to the dinner and auction portion of the 25th Annual Mike Munchak Charity Golf Classic currently scheduled for June 28, 2021 at the Scranton Country Club.
