Helping children be successful in school requires a broader focus than simply concentrating on academic skills. The United Way works with families, educators and community organizations to focus on the overall well-being of families and the healthy growth and development of children so they can focus on success in school...and life!
Children’s Produce Markets/Neighborhood Under One Roof
The United Way continued its partnership with the Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO)/Weinberg Food Bank to offer monthly mobile food pantries hosted by Adams, Tripp and McNichols Plaza Elementary schools in the Scranton School District. With the addition of Adams Elementary school last year, this program now reaches families in each of the elementary schools in the Scranton School District. In addition to nutritious, fresh foods offered by CEO, the United Way organized volunteers and ensured community organizations are on hand to educate families about the many services being offered. Last year 45 community agencies were present and 2,563 families were served.
Dental Health Project
Through the kindness of a generous community sponsor and in partnership with the Scranton Primary Health Care Center, the United Way distributed more than 1,000 dental health bags free of charge to people of all ages in need in our community. The bags included a free dental exam for all recipients and were packed by student volunteers from Our Lady of Peace School.
