In an era where digital connections and community bonds are more vital than ever, The United Way of Lackawanna, Wayne & Pike proudly introduces our Social Connectivity for Older Adults programs. Recognizing the importance of fostering meaningful relationships and combatting social isolation among our senior community members, this initiative is designed to create a supportive and engaging environment. As we embark on this journey, our goal is to bridge the gap between generations, cultivate lasting connections, and enhance the well-being of older adults by providing opportunities for social interaction, shared experiences, and a sense of belonging. Join us in building a community where every individual, regardless of age, feels valued, connected, and vibrant.
Age Friendly Lackawanna Collaborative
The Age Friendly Lackawanna Collaborative is dedicated to making Lackawanna County an inclusive, equitable, and supportive place where residents of all ages, especially older adults, can live, work and prosper. We recognize the importance of fostering livable environments that promote healthy aging, accessibility, and participation across all stages of life. The Collaborative is made up of dozens of social service, health care, government and other organizations that serve older adults, and is led by the United Way of Lackawanna, Wayne & Pike. Together, we are tackling issues that affect older adults such as but not limited to social isolation, loneliness, food insecurity, technology barriers, transportation and financial stability.
Social Isolation & Resource Navigation
Older adults can work one-on-one with a volunteer navigator to identify potential risks of isolation or loneliness. Once screened, navigators will work to connect them to individualized services and supports that can help reduce their isolation and its causes.
Technology Tutoring
Through a collaboration with the Taylor Community Library, we provide one-on-one technology training for older adults to help build skills & confidence using digital devices and online platforms. These training sessions are free, friendly, relaxed, and productive. No two sessions are the same, as we truly customize them to each older adult’s individual needs, questions and interests. We let you set the pace so that stress and frustration are minimized. Sessions take place every Thursday from 3pm to 5pm at the Taylor Library. Registration is recommended by calling the United Way.
Friendly Caller Program
In addition to the isolation collaborative, the United Way of Lackawanna, Wayne & Pike also offers a friendly caller program. This is a fun, free & friendly service that pairs volunteers with individuals interested in receiving weekly, friendly calls. These weekly calls service as a beckon to reach out to individuals who may feel isolation and seek additional resources. Our friendly callers are the bridge between at-risk older adults and isolation navigators. Connecting the two parties help fight the invisible, discouraging and detrimental barrier of social isolation.
