The United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development as a Scholarship Organization, and we are proud to say that we led the way as one of the first United Ways in Pennsylvania to receive this designation.

Our Pre-Kindergarten Scholarship Program offers tuition assistance to children from financially eligible families for approved pre-school programs that meet the stringent guidelines set forth by the DCED. Last year, more than $428,000 was raised through this program to benefit children in six counties in NEPA. Since the program's local inception in 2005, area companies have donated nearly $2 million to help almost 1,000 children attend preschool and begin the journey of life-long learning.

Businesses that qualify may receive a pre-k tax credit to 100% of the first $10,000 contributed during the taxable year to the United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties through this program. The business may also receive a tax credit equal to 90% of any additional amount contributed during the taxable year, up to a maximum of $150,000.

Businesses that are subject to the following taxes can apply for tax credits:

  • Corporate Net Income Tax
  • Capital Stock Franchise Tax
  • Bank and Trust Company Shares Tax
